above zero

I had been with Diet Pepsi a long time, although no one would mistake our relationship for love. I mean, it was clear I would rather be with Pepsi or Coke, but a calorically-balanced life with either of these beverages at my side was just out of my league. Then I met Coke Zero and thought, "This is it! I have found the soulmate soft drink that will be mine for the rest of my life!" We were, indeed, very happy together. That is, until a couple weeks ago, when Coke Cherry Zero sashayed into the cooler of the market near where I work. Coke Zero, I realize now, was just love, not that love is nothing. Coke Cherry Zero is both love and a sublime spiritual experience.

I don't bother with diet pop. If I can't have the real thing, I'll just have water thankyouverymuch

You are a missionary for Coke Cherry Zero! And a good one, too. Thanks to you, I'm now totally hooked...

Try Coke black cherry vanilla ...

As I am staunchly anti-Pepsi, I'm all for your switch to Zero. But man, to me, cherry-flavored colas always tasted just like 'tussin. Have you had new cherry NyQuil? I'm just saying. It's pretty darn close.

Oh - in case you or anyone else assumes I'm staunchly anti-Pepsi because of abhorrent corporate responsibility: I know, Coca Cola's abhorrent, too. I'm anti-Pepsi because it tastes like 30 year-old generic Coke that went flat.

Absolute Zero would have been an equally apt title for this post.

Can Absolut Zero be far behind?

Yes, sounds like cough medicine.

Did I miss a post? I thought you were on a diet? Or is this diet sugar water? Lol.

Try a glass of water every now and then if you are really trying to lose weight?

I hope Diet Pepsi doesn't start stalking you.

I'm partial to Diet Coke w/ Lime. Or Diet Sunkist. Mmmm, fruity soda.

I've never really understood why people assume that water is so much better for the purposes of losing weight than zero-calorie sodas. (There may of course be other health reasons to avoid diet sodas.) Assuming equal intake of calories, drinking 0-calorie soda vs. 0-calorie water isn't going to make an appreciable difference in weight loss; in fact, if anything, the caffeine in diet sodas might have a slight positive effect on the "calories out" side of the weight loss equation.

I suppose if Jeremy's one of those people who can't drink a diet soda without having a bag of chips to go along with it, then that's different. (Note, though, than it's not the diet soda per se that sabotages weight loss, but the diet soda's effect on the "otherwise equal caloric intake" assumption.) Given that his consumption of diet soda seems to have been relatively constant through periods of both weight gain and weight loss, the "don't drink diet soda" prescription doesn't seem to, well, hold water.

From a strictly caloric standpoint, if caffeinated diet soda has any stimulant effect than it has lower net calories than water, as anon just stated. This is not to defend compulsive soda consumption.

For the confused earlier anon commenter (10:26pm): Coke Zero is diet soda. Not putting "Diet" in the name of diet sodas is a marketing strategy to make them sell better among men. In my case, this didn't work so much as making Coke Cherry Zero taste great did.

I like how snotty folks are willing to be when leaving anonymous comments. That's directed at you, ANON 10:26, "Did I miss a post? I thought you were on a diet? Or is this diet sugar water? Lol. Try a glass of water every now and then if you are really trying to lose weight?"

Or better than, "snotty", perhaps smug and stupid. Yes, I said it, "smug and stupid."

Enjoy coke zero. I did for months. But I've come back to diet coke for some reason. Actually, I like the diet version better. I the the taste. Kinda like my love of non-meat tasting veggie-burgers. They always seem better to me. For some reason I never like the imitation of the real thing. Or perhaps its that no matter how much I like them, the fact that imitations aren't real always cuts away from my enjoyment. Who knows.

(There may of course be other health reasons to avoid diet sodas.) You got it right there. And those other reasons affect weight loss. Look into it.

shaka, get over your nonsense. Water beats soda pop anyday. Duh. Loser.

I also have a strange loyalty to Diet Coke, despite knowing on an objective level that Coke Zero does indeed taste more like real Coke. Somewhere along the way, I guess I just got used to the taste, like I did with L.A. tap water.

And drinking pop is definitely better for you than drinking L.A. tap water.

By the way, Jeremy, I'm running the marathon this weekend! Thanks for your words of encouragement a few months back - I just keep telling myself that the cheering crowds will prevent me from collapsing around mile 17.

Not sure what they put in it, but Diet Dr. Pepper can take the paint off of a car's body. Hopefully the same is not true for your new soda crush.

Tom, I thought you were his FRIEND! How confused can you be, recommending water over soda for someone on a diet? You hater! lol

Ang said...

Tom: Coke will do that, too. From what I've read, it's the citric acid. You could also clean out a toilet with it, too. Apparently, I mean.
