wwol: week two report

WWOL Week Two
(week two weigh-in)

Okay, so we hit a bit of a rough patch in Week Two of my diet. On Friday I ate three hot fudge sundaes and half of a cow. No. Kidding. In fact, I've done fine with the diet part and am confident that I stayed under my points for the week, but I fell off the wagon of explicit tracking while I was in NYC and traveling meant that I did not get to do my weekly weigh-in on Friday like I was supposed to. So, I've made the executive decision that Week Two for me lasted nine days instead of seven days, and Sunday is my new weekly weigh-in date instead of Friday.

As for the Week Two weigh in, I was just two-tenths of a pound below last week's weight, which didn't surprise me since I thought I didn't think I really lost more than five pounds my first week. I do feel like the elevator is going down and so feel good.

BTW, I joined Netflix so I could watch TV shows while I am on my elliptical trainer. Let me know if you have any recommendations for TV series I should put in my queue. I watched a couple seasons of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer when I was in graduate school, but otherwise haven't watched series television in well over a decade, so I'm pretty teevee terra incognita. Of course, I joined just in time for it to be warm enough that I'll probably spend most days jogging outside, and then I'll just use my iPod as it seems like it might be dangerous to hold my laptop in front of my face to watch DVDs while I jog.

If you liked Buffy, then you will enjoy Firefly. Another great series from the creator of Buffy. It never got the run it should have but is well worth watching during the time spent on the "machines designed to prevent crotchety old gelatinous people".
It seems like Sci-fi but is really about people and their problems, like Buffy was. People never got that. Give it a chance. Its a 4 DVD set. Thats my 2 cents. good luck

A slight loss is still a loss. :)

Congratulations on managing to not gain while traveling. That's impressive.

The Prisoner is 17 episodes of awesome. La Femme Nikita the TV show is pretty good too. Many of the people who worked on LFN later did 24.

T.V. Series worth watching while training:

(1) The entire run of HBO's The Wire. Season 1 starts a bit slowly (imho) but picks up pace. If you enjoy complicated plots with multiple intertwined character arcs, this show is for you. I believe The Wire to be the best show on T.V.

(2) The first season of Lost. I avoided this show when it first came out because it seemed over-hyped. But when I started watching the pilot episode (via a DVD rental) I was hooked within 5 minutes. I'm not as enthusiastic about season 2.

(3) I'm not sure if its available yet, but if it is... Season 1 of NBC's Heroes. This in particular should appeal to a fan of Adventures of Kavalier and Klay.

Wonderfalls (which is the only TV I've watched in the last couple of years, except for The OC, which was kind of fun, but you need to watch it with people who take it seriously so you can astound them with your incredible powers of plot prediction, so I won't recommend it for exercising alone.)

I'll second the recommendations for The Wire and Arrested Development. Both are the best of their genre.

Also, for a guilty pleasure, try Veronica Mars, season 1 (season 2 is okay and season 3 is a train-wreck). The dialogue is snappy and smart, with lots of references to pop culture.

House. I love House. It's medical drama, but good medical drama. Mostly due to the amazingness that is Hugh Laurie.

'dead like me' is a great show. it is about a girl who becomes a grim reaper after she dies (from being struck by a falling space station toilet).

Six Feet Under is very good

I agree on Alias (seasons 1 & 2 are especially good). I'd also recommend both the BBC and NBC versions of The Office. I just finished watching seasons 1-3 of Nip/Tuck. It's about as trashy as tv can get, but I'm hooked! -JJ

I like working out to TV that I don't have to watch too closely (if I concentrate too hard on it, I stop sweating).

The early eps of Scrubs are alternately hilarious, eclectic, and schmaltzy, but I think they're fun.

First season of Top Chef is good.

And my new favorite show is How I Met Your Mother, a sweet and funny sitcom. Neil Patrick Harris is worth the price of admission.

If you like hearing inside stories about Hollywood, Jon Favreau hosted a cool little show on IFC called "Table For Five," where actors, comedians, and others had dinner together and talked about the business of show. I enjoyed that a lot, actually.

America's Next Top Model is hilarious if you like reality camp.

Freaks & Geeks was an honest-to God good, funny show, but it sadly got canceled after a season.

A lot of people are probably sighing and rolling their eyes right now, but I find House to consistently be a solidly entertaining hour of television.

Did you ever watch the Sopranos? I think it's out of fashion to still like it, but in particular I think the first few seasons are really engrossing.

Whatever you do, don't let anyone talk you into Grey's Anatomy. Most everyone I know started out in full love mode with that show, and in the last season, has grown to hate it with a fire that could melt a car.

Anyway, those are my two cents.

I second "The Wire". I also believe it to be the best show on TV. It's about drug dealers, cops, and politicians in Baltimore. What's interesting is how the structure of the drug dealers and the cops and politicians sort of mirror each other (and their aims and strategies aren't that different either). Anyway, it's cool and compelling. And it's been steadily getting better.

I also liked the first season of Deadwood.

Also, Entourage. Fun. Funny. Gives you a sense of inside Hollywood without making you feel like you need to take a shower. Although you will need to take a shower after all that working out!

I concur about House.

Don't watch Sex and the city (or at least, I wouldn't). I find it nearly impossible to care about any of the characters (they're so shallow). Their "unbelievable" lives are hard for me to get over (and YES, I AM recommending House). Also, it will make you hate, HATE New York. And lord knows I love everything New York

Oh, and I forgot. Congrats on losing weight/not gaining weight while traveling! I had a week similar to yours. But I'm not getting down on myself. I'm still on the horse! (Or after falling off, I got back on). Cheering for you from the now warmer midwest...

Gilmore Girls, my impression of you is that you would like it. Pop culture references and witty dialogue abound, and it will make you laugh out loud.

At least the first 2 or 3 seasons of Gilmore Girls...

In case you're keeping count, I also vote for Arrested Development, BBC and US The Office, and SATC. And I'll add West Wing, BBC's Coupling, Big Love, 30 Rock (not on DVD yet, but available through itunes and other internet sources), The Daily Show, and maybe Project Runway and The Sarah Silverman Show.

Ummm...is there a better show on teevee than "The Office?"

I can't understand why no one has suggested it (except in anonymous 1:25's list), except when I look at the quality of many of the suggestions, I guess it makes sense.

Battlestar Galactica is one of the best things on tv, though skip the miniseries and go directly into season 1.

The HBO/BBC series Rome is also excellent. Season 1 (on DVD) covers Julius Caesar and Season 2 (now on HBO) does the young Augustus. In both cases it uses an upstairs/downstairs approach and conveys how alien and pagan Roman culture was.

Nice to see that I'm "no one", Anon 1:49. Read more carefully before you tell all of us we have sucky taste ;-)
I also have to second Ang's Freaks & Geeks suggestion. So many great things about that show...

Hmmm. Back to weight: Didn't you lose weight a couple of years ago just before your arrival in Cambridge? Maybe you want to regain it for your return to Madison. Not that it's a good subconscious idea.

Are you going to keep us posted on your decisions/reactions?

jeremy said...

Yes. I put the first first season CD of several of the suggested in my queue. Netflix is sending me Arrested Development, along with the movie Stranger Than Fiction.

I've already seen the UK version of The Office, btw, and loved that. A friend urged me to watch it and I did on the computer in my apt in Madison.

thirding the Freaks and Geeks recommendation. Not just because it's a totally awesome show, but because (though I don't know you) based on your blog, I think you in particular would enjoy it.
