what are the chances of this news story being true? none? zero? subzero? subnone?

Headline: "Abandoned boy said to have been raised by a dog." Story here. Henry says to be sure to read the last part about the boy who was made "pack leader" if you have any lingering nondoubts about its veracity.

I just wanted to comment on the infamous dog boy of Lom, Bulgaria who was netted in 1963. Rural folk near Lom had been hearing plaintive howls that didn't seem like dog howls. Sightings of a feral boy were being reported and the local farmers soon took action. If my translation is correct, " he was of quickness almost non human" and what they finally had to do was to put meat scraps on a path and drop a net on him from a tree. The report went on to say that he was so wild they had to force beer down his throat and make him intoxicated to subdue him. He remained wild and had to be kept in a zoo for almost a year. Finally some Nuns were able to gain his confidence and a long rehab process began. Once he quit snapping and snarling, locals lost interest in him and the trail of this story pretty much goes cold except that his return to civilization was successful and he became a bank teller and married.

I think there is a trend for Western people to scoff at the mysterious and bizarre. In 1921 near Girona, Spain in the rugged hills a feral boy was killed in a ravine. He was found with 3 wild dogs gnawing on the leg of a young goat. The Catholic Church had sent several priests to this area to investigate the repeated rumors that a demon was on the loose near Girona - locals were complaining that a demon was destroying their goat herds. 38 young goats had been killed and gnawed on. Loners and the emotionally disturbed were starting to be made scapegoats, as human footprints had been seen by several dead goats. A wealthy land owner finally squelched the rumors by organizing a posse of sorts and they scoured the hills and gunned the boy down in a ravine. He was estimated to be 13 years old, and was put on display for a couple of days in front of a Catholic Church. Nothing else was known about him. It was Pope Pius XII who sealed the records of this 'event', thus preventing shcolars from doing any serious research on the matter.

I saw this story on tv. It was one of those newslite newsmagazines (20/20; Dateline; Springer). It was dumb.

Oh yeah? Well if you had some of your goats killed and gnawed on by a dirty wild kid you would be singing a different tune, buster.
