blogs may not have been enough for howard dean, but they are for shelly bright

Thanks all who followed my pleas to vote for Michelle for Storm Chaser. She won by 193 votes, which is presumably far less than the number of votes brought to her campaign by the JFW/NinaNet "Perfect Storm" Get Out The Vote campaign. In addition to getting to chase storms with the news crew, another part of her prize is that the station has set her up with her own blog. Apparently she also gets an all-expense paid trip to Lincoln, Nebraska as well, which has the world headquarters for Storm Chaser training. If she doesn't either link to my blog or bring me back something from Lincoln, I'm going to feel used (scroll to bottom of link).

Used?? Nonsense! When shelly b. wrote and told me of her tremendous success, I wrote back and said I can't wait to link to her blog stories. She's the first stormchaser I ever came across. Ocean would feel honored to include links to posts on clouds. Shelly b.: if you're reading this, no souvenirs needed! It was total pleasure! Besides, you didn't need us! You would have won anyway! These blog votes were trifle nothings. Congrats again! [Are you reading this, Jeremy? Are you throwing up yet?]

Jeremy, Jeremy, overstating your own causal role. The plea for votes went out over the soc grad listserv too, you know. That probably netted lots of votes because we love Michelle!

I don't know, soc grad students, you underestimate the power of the blog. And of multiple links.

I've had three different soc grad students tell me that they didn't vote after receiving the e-mail but did vote after reading my blog post. What I think this really means is that the e-mails and blog post had a synergistic effect. I certainly wouldn't want to downplay the role of the socgradchat listserv in this. All hail the Internet!

Wait, she gets to be a stormchaser AND she won a PS2? I suggest she donate that baby to the TA office as thanks for all the votes.

Michelle's quest for high-quality storm-related music has inspired my contact at the Canadian iTunes Music Store to program a Swoosh Bar of Stormy Songs. Should be up next Tuesday. (For those residing in the US, you have to change the store location on the main page to Canada.)

She definitely needs to use Riders On the Storm by the Doors for her theme song. That is one cool song.
