zoological mystery
I bought a bag of animal crackers out of the vending machine yesterday. It included several of the above. What is it supposed to be? Feel free to rotate your head or monitor around if you think that would help.
(As always when a book cover is used as background in a photo on this blog, an official JFW kewpie doll will be awarded to the first person to identify it.)

that's a penguin.
Doesn't the bill look weird if it's a penguin. Plus, what's with the quasi-eye-thing that would be at the bottom of the putative penguin's belly.
I think it's a turtle humping a manatee.
It's like one of those "vase or faces" eye puzzles. It's definitely a penguin, but on its side, I was momentarily convinced it was a turtle.
Still, I knew it was definitely some kind of marine life.
I think it's a penguin but, frankly, I like the "turtle humping a manatee" answer more.
I think the "eye" in the belly is just an imperfection. You're right that the bill looks more like a pelican, but how much anatomical accuracy do you expect from your animal crackers?
do the other animal crackers look especially much like the animals they represent? i happen to have a tub of animal crackers in my office. looking at them, i am not sure i could identify most.
since we are a non-profit, we could use a cheap brand of cracker. maybe all of your giraffes and elephants were well formed. these are not.
The book is Critser's Fat Land.
Hey, my dissertation is good for something!
My lone commenter thought it was a penguin, too.
It has another quasi-eye-thing on its shoulder, too; I assumed those were baking artifacts.
Gwen: I think you are right, or at least that it is a "vases or faces" puzzle like Mary says.
Ang: Congrats! You win the kewpie doll.
Lucy: Strange that we both called attention to the same cracker!
My first instinct was to say its a penguin, but now, after reading the comments, a platypus?
Embrace the mystery (it does the heart and soul good)! Now, if only this thing allowed anonymous ("And oh so mysterious," she whispered) comments :)
It's definitely a penguin.
It is unambiguously a sea turtle with angelic wings.
Clearly, the animal cracker manufacturer is mourning the future extinction of these majestic beasts and has chosen to express his or her grief through a stylized biscuit designed for children.
It's Wittgenstein's duckrabbit doing the backstroke.
