i knew they were going to be annoyed when i turned in that grant proposal using 8-point wingdings
Yeah, I don't know why anyone would use Helvetica or Arial for printed text, even though they are great screen fonts. I will probably use whichever between Palatino and Georgia allows one to squeeze in more text.
I'm not sad about anything that undermines the hegemony of Times New Roman.
(But, I should say, I don't hate Times New Roman anything like the way I hate SPSS or Paul McCartney. I don't even hate TNR at all. If I could blink my eyes and have "Overrated" tattooed on Paul McCartneys forehead, I might even choose TNR as the font I'd like the tattoo to use.)
Quite frankly, I'm amazed that the font policy is only one page long. We have one for tenure and promotion documents here at ND that's at least as involved as this.
And, I once had one sent back because they actually measure the characters and determined that I had violated rule 17.4b, characters per inch. I copied it on the copy machine enlarging it to 101%. It got through that time. Luckily, it did not interfere with the case and the object of the report is happily tenured.

Good grief. Anything else, NSF? You wanna tell me what my breakfast should be the morning I turn in my proposal?
what amazes me is that you can't use Times
Or Comic Sans.
What Gabriel Said. Helvetica is a great SCREEN font, but not so great for printed text.
