dan myers has 279 kiss songs on his iPod.

I was all ready to post something, but then I decided to check out some other blogs first. I promptly learned that Dan Myers has 279 Kiss songs on his iPod, more than twice as many as any artist other than the Beatles and Pink Floyd. My brain is now dominated by this fact. I can't even remember what I was going to post.

I know someone in sociology who once bought his girlfriend a scale for a present and now whenever I see him whatever else I think, "You bought your girlfriend a scale and presented it to her as a gift." Likewise, whenever I see Dan Myers, I will now think, "This man has 10,000 songs on his iPod, and still fully 2.79% of them are by Kiss." Not to draw any parallels between those two examples other than their being facts about people that, once learned by me, cannot be unlearned or even temporarily forgotten. 279 songs! By Kiss!

I had this roommate in college whose last name was spelled the same as mine but was not related and pronounced it so it rhymed with "crazy." His favorite bands were Kiss and the Beach Boys. I like two Beach Boys songs total, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows", and two Kiss songs total, "Detroit Rock City" and, um, "Detroit Rock City."* Once I put up a couple posters in our dorm with his name and phone number advertising for members for a band that would play Beach Boys covers while wearing Kiss makeup and dressing in superheroes Underoos. I remember it included the line "Must be able to gyrate, but do so only when the situation warrants and is tasteful." My recollection is that he was angry when he saw the poster, but then also sort of sad when it hadn't prompted any calls.

* "Detroit Rock City" is by Kiss, right?

Thanks for headlining this little fact....

Actually, that number is a little misleading. It neglects Kiss spin offs like Ace Frehley's solo albums and Frehley's Comet.

For various strange reasons, I own something like 25 Kiss and Kiss-related albums. But I've probably only listened to one of them more than once--Kiss Double Platinum--which I've own since I was in junior high ($4, a cut-out purchased at Revco) because we wanted to play a couple of the songs in our "band," dude. So, If you want to buy a few of them off me to get more familiar with the catalog, I'd be willing to let them go on the cheap side! (Yes, DRC is Kiss, but I'm surprised you didn't first think of "I Wanna Rock and Roll all Night and Party Every Day.")

Dan: I'm disappointed. I was expecting a rousing defense of Kiss. Especially after posting I remembered that I also like "Calling Doctor Love."

Sorry Jeremy, I think Kiss is a lot of fun (and the tribute bands are even more fun), but they're not really defensible (Scord card: lyrics D; music C-; spectacle A+; brief attempt to play disco F; Gene Simmons's political attitudes D). I would say, though, that they are probably the band that has made the most out of the least.

Dan's comment about the fact that they are the band that has made the most out of the least is so true. I attribute that to the fact that Gene Simmons is obviously a better business man than musician.

I didn't do the Stata import, and I only have 3956 songs in iTunes (lame, I know), but R.E.M. tops the list at 122. If you combine the Replacements and Paul Westerberg, they are #2. How about you Brayden?

How have I suddenly transformed into the Gene Simmons defender? He was good in that movie where he was the villain and Tom Selleck was the hero. I dont remember what it was called, but it had these killer robot spiders.

A scale? As a GIFT? Did this couple stay together?

My stepdad once gave my mom a mousetrap as an anniversary gift. It was one of those that catches them alive and then herds them into a jar of water and drowns them. Lovely.

Jeremy-
Sadly, my disappointment at NOT recruiting anyone for the band was the beginning of the slow decline of my interest in Kiss/Beach Boys combinations. Fortunately, Twisted Sister and Petula Clark were there to pick me up.

Ha! I may have 279 Kiss songs, but I actually have 141 R.E.M. songs (somehow that didn't get imported into stata right, so now I have to recheck the entire analysis!).

I will dig up some fun Gene Simmons quotes for you. It's true he has a great tongue, but that's not everything, you know!

"they are probably the band that has made the most out of the least"

Best backhanded compliment I've heard in a long time!

I always thought "Beth" was one of the better KISS songs...
