from cambridge: my first night as city-dweller

At the time, the amount of money I was given for moving expenses to Cambridge seemed very generous. Instead, there is good reason to think that it is already all gone between the movers and other expenses already incurred. In an effort to save money, then, I decided that rather than spent $110 for a hotel tonight, I would sleep on the hardwood floors here in my new apartment. My mattress is two fleece throws that I bought at a CVS Pharmacy for $12, and my pillow is a 4-pak of toilet paper bought from the same store. Given what a finicky sleeper I am anyway, I have to admit to not being very optimistic as to how this will work. At least it will probably be good for getting caught up on e-mail and work, I guess.

Update, 6:30am: Not bad, really. Or at least not bad from my perspective: the toilet paper rolls are now squished almost entirely flat, so their opinion might differ.

That's funny. Once in Boston I bought probably the same pillow/fleece set from CVS during the Eastern Sociological Society meetings (which are incidentally in Boston again in 2006).

That's funny, last night I had a dream the Jeremy chucked it all, dyed his hair blonde, and decided to be the next Eminem here in central Iowa...

(As jnsys knows, it wouldn't be the first time I've dyed my hair blonde.)

Anyway, my former aspirations to be the Only Rural Rapper That Matters ended when I decided that Freaktoastt J needed to retire and work on the whole tenure thing. Maybe there will be a reunion concert someday, though, or at least a short set of songs off the Fourteen Scatterplots CD.

at what point in the night did the toilet paper become a sentient being capable of opinion? usually things like this happen between 2 and 3 am.....

Jeremy, was that Freaktoastt J or Milquetoastt J?

How would you feel if I contacted some of my Cambridge friends to see if they could lend you something? Or is this part of the adventure?

I slept on a tiny mattress (not really a mattress, one of those seats that folds out) the first few nights (weeks?) I moved into my new place and my stuff hadn't yet come along (that is, I hadn't yet gone to get my stuff from storage). You have a lot of things using up your energies right now, this may not be something to pursue for too long.

Eszter: Thanks for the offer. But actually, according to the moving company update this morning, my stuff (incl. my bed) is supposed to arrive in the next hour!

To the uninitiated: Regarding the Freaktoastt J vs. Milquetoastt J comment, this is actually a reference--apparently by one of the legions of anonymous FJ fans out there--to one of the more obscure songs on Fourteen Scatterplots: "Next Time Turn Your Cel Phone Off Before Lecture (Sorry to Have Popped That Cap in Yo' Ass)"

Well done....

Sorry, Freaktoastt, but tough just doesn't work on you. It's kind of like those old deodorant commercials, where Charles Barkley talked about "odoriferous emanations."

City dwellers are across the river in Boston. You are in the countryside, relatively speaking. (BTW is Madison a city or ?)

A friend of mine once spent a night in the Spencer, IA jail. He used a single roll of toilet paper for a pillow. A 4 pack must be like heaven!
