the hilarity of academia, continued

"You know what they call the person who graduates at the bottom of their medical school class?"
"What?"
"Doctor."
"Ha. You know what they call the person who graduates at the bottom of a group of social science Ph.D.'s?"
"Doctor?"
"Barista."

In Madison it's a Union Cab Driver. Then again, those folks probably come from all kinds of places in their disciplines (top and bottom). And what's really depressing about them is that when they talk to you about their dissertations (or in some cases, their dissertation ideas), they actually sound really interesting.

what's a barista?

Barista: commonly known as a South American Blackjack dealer, usually found in back-alley Barrios and not established gaming houses.
In Brazil, a Barista is a suave hustler whose focus is on older, wealthy women. Brazilian Baristas are flashy dressers and dancers with garishly styled hair, sporting lots of gold jewelry. Don't listen to any other definitions of the word either.

A basrista is one who engages in willful memetic reductionism. Ignore Paulo, he is just speculating.

Real Baristas spell correctly, and would engage in mimetic reductionism only out of necessity, not by force of habit.

Mimetic reductionism is what LDM engages in.

And those in the fine arts can only hope to aspire to someday be a barista... and usually end up in telemarketing, or doing web design for pr0n sites...
