desperate people do desperate things

Thank you for your recent request. Your order number C048126xxxx
for telephone number 608 233-xxxx was completed on 03/29/2005.
I am writing this from Borders (thanks, N.) I am at Borders because, as per the order fulfilled above, I no longer have Internet access at home. I no longer have Internet at home because I did one of those "Are You an Internet Addict?" quizzes and my score was sufficiently through the roof as to completely freak me out. I decided that I needed to introject more moderation into my relationship with the Internet, and, I'm not very good at achieving moderation except through drastic action. I recognize that coming up to Borders and using the Internet is not exactly consistent with my goal of drying out my cognitive dependence on the Internet, but, lo, it's only the first day.

Anyway, world, you should no longer expect me to have an e-mail response time that puts most 911 services to shame. Indeed, if it's after hours and you have my phone number, you might actually try calling me rather than e-mailing me. Otherwise, world, you will have to wait until I get to the office in the morning.

Wow, is this for real? Even though I've been trying to redirect my own leisure time away from the internets and towards spouse, children, and literature (among other things), I think I could give up my car before I could give up in-home data.

I just hope he's not going off the deep end here.

Holy crap. Those polls and quizzes are bunk. Unless you are sitting in front of your computer, missing work to be on the internet, while piles of fast food wrappers and mounds of garbage pile up around you, it's safe to say you are not addicted.

Any bets going on how long it's going to be before Jeremy gets it turned back on? Or is he going to camp out at the coffee shop or at work for even longer than before?

The first day is always the hardest. You might try the nicotine gum - that worked for me. Oh wait...this is for something different.

I am with jnsys, those quizzes are lame. The key to addictions is that you do it even when it is causing you harm in some way, but I doubt that this is the case for you.

Still, I wonder if the no internet at home thing will help a bit with your insomnia.

more power to you in the search for the balanced life.

It seems, from the nature of most of these comments, that your readers either do not know the true extent of your internet usage or they're all addicts themselves. From someone who can go a whole weekend without logging on, Be strong! You can do it! And good for you for taking control of your time.

Come on, Jeremy, get the internets back into the RV. You know you want to. It's not really hurting anyone, is it?

So far, I've been dealing with no internet at home by spending much more time at the office.
