ReplyDeleteIt's definitely an American thing. I've heard it in the Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast.

ReplyDeleteI first heard it in R&H's Carousel: "March went out like a lion...., then April cried and stepped aside, and along comes pretty little May..."
It's not an American thing. I learned the phrase as a child, in Ireland.
