flays of glory

Tennis headline from via the NYT:

I have never before seen the word 'flays' used as a synonym for 'defeats'. I associate 'flays' with taking the skin off someone/something (esp. while it is still alive). This, in turn, I do not associate with tennis.

I totally read that as "Federer Flays Blake, Sharapova Run Through." Of course, it's 5 AM and I haven't actually gotten any sleep, so the thought of a tennis star going on a murderous rampage sounds perfectly rational to me.

It's a hard, hard world out there.
Imageries seem to be crossing the line: everyday sports, everyday wars (hope the academic world is milder).

Do you think Bobby Flay plays tennis?
